THERMAL POOL (1999), BY BOB RANKIN
ACQUIRED FROM THE ARTIST, RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA, DECEMBER 1999
ACRYLIC ON HAND-PRESSED NEPALESE PAPER
The Thermal Pool series is inspired by a trip that Bob Rankin took to Yellowstone National Park several years ago. This series is very popular in our family:
  • My mom purchased a large Thermal Pool work from Bob a couple of years ago... she has it hanging over her mantel and really likes it a lot.
  • In 1998, I commissioned Bob to create a Thermal Pool as a wedding present for my sister Lee and her husband Don. When I gave it to them, they loved it.
  • My cousin Anna liked Lee's Thermal Pool so much, I offered to commission one for Anna and her husband Murphy for their wedding. So, Anna and Murphy now have a Thermal Pool of their own.
  • Since it seemed like everyone else in my family had one of these works and I didn't, I acquired one from Bob during his Holiday Houdio show in December 1999. :-)
These works are unique for Bob in that they don't use much in the way of different colors, but instead rely almost solely on their texture to convey the appearance of a mineral-laden hot spring.
