WHITE OPAL GOLD LEAF BOWL (2000), BY DICK HUSS
ACQUIRED FROM JERALD MELBERG GALLERY, CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA, JULY 2000
HAND-BLOWN GLASS AND GOLD LEAF, SIGNATURE ENGRAVED ON THE BASE BY THE ARTIST
When I visited Jerald Melberg's gallery on the morning of July 21st, he had just received a shipment of Dick Huss' latest works, to be included in the grand opening of the gallery's new crafts section... when I saw this work, I was immediately impressed by its simplicity and coolness.

Basically, Dick created a cylindrical bowl of white glass... while it was still on the blowpipe, he rolled the cylinder through shreds of gold leaf that were laid out on a hotplate. Then, to make sure that the gold leaf was protected, he added a layer of clear glass to the outside of the work. Finally, he added a red lip wrap that really stands out in contrast to the rest of the work.

I really like the effect that Dick has created... the white glass glows from within if you light it from above, and the red lip wrap and gold leaf really complement each other. Very nice!
