WINTER SHADOWS FROM THE HILLTOP (1999), BY THOMAS McNICKLE
ACQUIRED FROM JERALD MELBERG GALLERY, CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA, OCTOBER 1999
WATERCOLOR AND PASTELS ON PAPER, 28 1/4" BY 21"

I first saw this painting at Jerald Melberg Gallery about one week before the opening of a show of Thomas McNickle's work at the gallery. I actually visited the gallery to take one last look at the Dale Chihuly: New Work show before it moved on... while I was there, I happened to see some of Thomas McNickle's new work, as well. I already had one McNickle (Slanting Clouds) in my collection, so I already knew that I liked his work.

This is a winter scene from the hills of Pennsylvania, where Thomas McNickle lives. The first time I saw this work, I couldn't believe that it was a watercolor... from across the room, it almost looks like a photograph. It's only when you get up close to this work that you can see that McNickle has used pastels to add detail to the watercolors.

I just love the realism of this work. Very cool.
