EYE (2001), BY ÆSA BJÖRK THORSTEINSDÓTTIR
ACQUIRED FROM THE ARTIST, BERGEN, NORWAY, APRIL 2001
CAST GLASS, 1 1/2" CUBE, TEXT INSCRIBED BY THE ARTIST
This small cast glass cube has five smooth sides, and one side that contains a casting of someone's closed left eye... the casting is quite detailed, and even shows eyelashes. The bottom of the work bears the following inscription in Icelandic:
Ísblá augu hennar horfðu dreymandi útyfir hafið
This translates to:
Her ice blue eyes looked dreamingly out over the sea
The inscription is backwards, so to read it you have to look through the top of the work.

When she sent it to me, Æsa told me that she was planning to use a series of these eyes in an installation. I'm sure the installation was interesting.
