COASTAL STUDY II (1999), BY CHRIS BURKHOLDER
ACQUIRED FROM JERALD MELBERG GALLERY, CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA, DECEMBER 1999
ACRYLIC ON CANVAS, 13 3/4" BY 10"
Chris Burkholder's works are based on a combination of memories of various places he's been and whatever he sees in his mind's eye when he begins to paint. As with all of Chris Burkholder's works, this work has a very atmospheric, ethereal quality about it... almost like it's a memory of your own.

What I really like about this work is the sky. The clouds in this work look like they're moving past fairly rapidly, not like those big puffy clouds that you often see in works of art. These clouds have some real energy, and the way the light catches them is really nice. The sky in this work continues my trend of "cool skies" in art... see Kathleen Norris Cook's Killer Cloud or Thomas McNickle's Slanting Clouds for more examples of what I'm talking about.
