POLAR SEQUENCE DRH97PS (1997), BY DAVID HUCHTHAUSEN
ACQUIRED FROM THE ARTIST, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, AUGUST 2005
CUT, FRACTURED, AND LAMINATED SCHOTT OPTICAL GLASS AND VITROLITE, 10" WIDE BY 10" HIGH BY 5" DEEP, SIGNATURE AND SERIAL NUMBER ENGRAVED BY THE ARTIST

I'm a big fan of optical glass... I really love how it refracts and processes light and how the reflections, both internal and external, of a smoothly-polished piece of optical glass can amplify the visual effect of a work of art. It's no wonder, then, that I have so many works in my collection that incorporate optical glass. I especially like David Huchthausen's optical glass works... he has mastered the skills of cutting, fracturing, and polishing optical glass and then adding colored antique glass to it to produce stunning works of art.

So, I really appreciated it when David gave me the opportunity to acquire this work from him. It's a younger, smaller cousin to my first Huchthausen (Implosion Sequence DRH93W), and was created using pretty much the same techniques. The main difference is the size: This work is not even half the size as the Implosion Sequence, and incorporates much less colored glass... in this case, a small strip of colored glass and vitrolite stripes on the top of the work. The main slab, which David fractured with a tungsten carbide chisel to create a base, includes four carved lenses which help to create additional reflections. (By contrast, my Implosion Sequence has only a single lens.)

David created about six works in the Polar Sequence series before moving on to other series, and mine is the last of them. If I could fill my house with David's work, I'd do it in a second... so I'm really glad to have been able to add this work to my collection.

Awesome!
