NOON ON THE BAY (2000), BY SUE LYNCH
ACQUIRED FROM ANNAPOLIS MARINE ART GALLERY, ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND, APRIL 2000
WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, 37 3/4" BY 21 3/4"
Earlier in 2000, I learned that Willard Bond would be participating in a show at the Annapolis Marine Art Gallery in early April. So, because I'm a big admirer of his work, I decided that I would have to pay a visit to the gallery and meet him. I arranged to take some vacation time, and drove up to the DC area to spend a week with my sister Lee Kennedy and her husband Don.

My sister Lee, my brother Ward, and I headed on over to Annapolis on the morning of April 1... before Willard Bond arrived, we took a look at some of the other works on display in the gallery. This work by Sue Lynch really caught my eye, so I decided to acquire it.

Basically, this work shows several yachts sailing in a sort of loose formation. Even though it's fairly obvious that that is what the image represents, this work is actually quite abstract... you see the shapes of the sails, but nothing else that indicates that there are boats underneath the sails. The colors used in this work are distinctive and bright, and the curves of the lines of the sails seem very realistic to me. (When I met her, Sue told me that she spends quite a bit of time practicing making these curves by hand.) Another thing I like about this work is that there seems to be an invisible diagonal line connecting the tops of the sails on the left side of the work... it creates a dynamic feeling that I really think works well.
