TWO-TONE VASE (2001), BY NADÈGE DESGENÉTEZ
ACQUIRED FROM VETRI, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, FEBRUARY 2002
HAND-BLOWN GLASS, 11" HIGH BY 5" IN DIAMETER, SIGNATURE ENGRAVED ON THE BASE BY THE ARTIST
Nadège Desgenétez is a French glassblower who primarily works out of Benjamin Moore's glass studio in Seattle, often assisting the other glassblowers with their work. The rest of the time, though, she is busy creating her own works... her background is in industrial design, and as a result, her works are often very simple but elegant in design.

This vase was created using the incalmo technique of joining two bubbles of glass, each a different color, and then forming the combined bubbles into a vase. (Sonja Blomdahl's vases are created using the same technique.) In the case of this vase, Nadège has used a very nice combination of blues. The coloring, combined with the "simple" shape of the vase (I'm usually not a big fan of very ornate work), creates a vase that really appeals to my sensibilities. Of course, this is designed to be a functional vase, but I think it looks best all by itself.
