YOHEN BOWL (2000), BY SHINJI YONEHARA
A GIFT FROM CHAPPELL GALLERY, NEW YORK, NEW YORK, DECEMBER 2000
HAND-BLOWN GLASS
Each year, Alice Chappell commissions a series of small works to be given as gifts to collectors. In 2000, she chose Japanese glass artist Shinji Yonehara to create small bowls in the style known as yohen. This particular style involves pressing silver into the molten glass, resulting in a rough surface and embedded beads of silver in the glass. The oxidation effect of melting silver on glass also results in the yellowish areas around both silver patches.
